FRANKLIN ISLAND LIGHT - Maine

Location: Muscongus Bay
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 57 feet
Year Established: 1805

Franklin Island Light sits on Franklin Island in the heart of Muscongus Bay and is one of Maine’s oldest light stations, originally established in the early 1800s to warn mariners of the bay’s tricky waters. The present cylindrical brick tower was built in 1855, replacing an earlier structure from the first decade of the century.

The light stands about 45 feet tall with a focal height of roughly 57 feet and flashes every six seconds. The lighthouse was automated in 1967 and remains active today, though the keeper’s house and other buildings are long gone.

The island itself is part of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and the light isn’t generally open to visitors, but boaters and wildlife enthusiasts often enjoy views of this historic beacon amid the bay’s islands and sea life.
